Before & After

Mandy was involved in a playground accident in 1989 and fractured off the incisal edges of her upper central incisors. The incisors were restored conservatively with bonded composite. Dr. Scott straightened Mandy’s teeth with traditional braces 1991-1993. In 1995, her upper central incisors began to darken and x-rays indicated a need for root canal therapy which Dr. Scott successfully completed. In 1999, she wished for a more definitive solution in both shade match and strengthening her two front teeth.

This case demonstrates the importance of a coordinated effort between dentist and a master lab ceramist through photography to mimic special characterization requirements necessary for natural cosmetics.

Mandy first lightened her teeth with a take-home bleaching system. At the initial try in, Dr. Scott didn’t feel the all porcelain Empress crowns were a perfect match and additional photographs with the crowns in place were taken. This information would allow the ceramist to critique the restorations as well as help him make the necessary shade correction. The second try in was a beautiful match and the crowns were bonded in place.

The patient appeared radiant and felt good about how well her crowns blended in with her natural teeth. It was very gratifying to finish this case and experience the patient’s excitement with her improved appearance.

Dear Scott,

I just wanted to tell you thank you very much for the beautiful smile you have given to me. It is absolutely amazing how much your teeth can change your appearance! I receive many compliments on my smile and I love seeing the look of astonishment on people’s faces when I tell them that my two front teeth are crowns. Thanks for all your hard work!!

Sincerely,

Mandy

P.S. I am sorry I doubted you when I was in the 4th grade when you fixed my front teeth after I chipped them on the playground. I thought you made them too big. Ha! Do you remember that? I promise to never doubt you again!
