Orthodontics & Invisalign® in Brandon
Our philosophy for children, ages 9 to 11, is to use traditional braces to guide teeth into their proper position. Adults can benefit from braces at any age. Many adults seeking straighter teeth opt for Invisalign clear aligners or conventional braces when appropriate (not all cases can be effectively treated with Invisalign).
Our approach for children is to eliminate crowding early, before all the permanent teeth erupt. We place the anterior teeth in proper alignment, the molars in their proper relationship, and allow the maxilla and mandible to mold around them. This often gives the patient adequate space for all teeth and lessens the chance of relapse.
Adult orthodontics is treated differently because all permanent teeth are in and we no longer have skeletal growth to work with. Some mildly crowded cases can be treated either traditionally or with Invisalign, which is a series of clear aligners that gradually repositions teeth. Moderate crowding may involve slenderizing a few teeth slightly to reduce the tooth mass to a fixed arch size. Advanced Crowding may require extraction or referral to an orthodontist and/or an oral surgeon should the case require orthodontics and orthognathic surgery.
Whether you choose orthodontics or Invisalign clear aligners, a commitment of 12-24 months is typically required. If you are interested in instant orthodontics or other alternatives to braces, Drs. Jeff and Scott Wehrkamp can recommend other treatments, such as veneers. Ask your dentist what your options are to a more functional, esthetic smile.
