How Do Braces Work?

Traditional braces are an orthodontic appliance that’s comprised of multiple parts, including metal brackets, bands, and the arch wire. They all work together to provide a strategically calculated and subtle amount of pressure on your misaligned teeth to move them into their ideal positions. The brackets are glued to the surface of your teeth and secure the arch wire in place. Every six to eight weeks, you’ll visit Dr. Wehrkamp to have your braces tightened to make sure the arch wire doesn’t become loose and stop facilitating alignment.

6 Steps of The Treatment Process

The process of getting braces in Brandon is relatively simple and can be broken down into six easy steps:

  1. Take images of your mouth and impressions of your teeth to develop a treatment timeline and plan.
  2. Attach brackets to the surface for your teeth and secure the arch wire. You’ll also get to choose the color of your rubber bands.
  3. Provide you with instructions on how to take care of your braces and avoid any damage. Also, let you know what to do if something does happen.
  4. Get your braces tightened every six or so weeks and conduct a quick progress check.
  5. Provide you with tips and tricks on how to overcome the adjustment period after braces are tightened.
  6. Remove braces and discuss your retainer options.
